Essay Theme: César Chávez inspired farm workers and millions of people who never worked on a farm to commit themselves to social, economic and civil rights activism. César’s legacy, like the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., continues to educate, inspire and empower people from all walks of life. He is a role model for all Americans and for generations to come.

Division I (Grades 3-5) 100 Word Essay

Division II (Grades 6-8) 250 Word Essay

1. Prepare your essay by researching the life and values of Cesar Chavez in books and valid websites.

2. Your essay should include:

• Information about the life and values of César Chávez
• His contributions to society
• Your beliefs on declaring a national holiday in honor of César Chávez and stating reasons why you agree or disagree.

Winners will be selected from each age group (3-5, 6-8, 9-12).
Winners will be honored at a special César Chávez Day Celebration.
Winners will be notified by phone no later than Thursday, March 27, 2008.

Rules

1. Contest is open to all active 3-12 grade students enrolled in Washoe County School District.
2. Requirements (failure to meet any requirement disqualifies the essay):
a. The essay must be either typewritten or neatly written in dark ink and double spaced. Use one side of white paper 8 1/2 x 11 inches. Number the pages consecutively.
b. Submit one copy of your essay. Attach an index card with your name, mailing address, telephone number, and your school, grade, and teacher’s name.
c. Cite any quotations, borrowed ideas, and facts that are not general knowledge. Any plagiarized work will be disqualified.
d. The essay must be written on the designated topic only, Should Congress declare a national holiday to honor of César Chávez?
e. The essay must be in English, except those written by students in English Language Learner (ELL) classes.
f. All entries must be received by 12:00 (noon) on Monday, March 24, 2008 and submitted to via school mail or regular mail:

Judging

A distinguished group of local educators and César Chávez Community Celebration Planning Committee members will judge the essays. Judging guidelines include:

1. Content:

• Does the essay demonstrate an understanding of the life accomplishments and values of César Chávez?
• Does the essay address the essay question Should Congress declare a national holiday to honor César Chávez?
• Does the essay persuade the reader?

2. Style: Is the essay original and interesting? Is it written with understanding and conviction? Does the personality of the writer come through?

3. Clarity of expression: Are the ideas clearly stated? Is the essay well-organized? Does it have an effective beginning and conclusion?

4. Mechanics: Is grammar, spelling, and punctuation reasonable accurate? Does the author cite all quotes, borrowed ideas, and the facts that are NOT general knowledge? Does the essay stay within the word limit?

First, Second, and Third place prizes will be awarded in each of the three divisions at the awards ceremony. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Notification of Winners

On March 27, 2008 winners will be notified. All winning entries will be displayed and prizes will be presented at the awards ceremony at Circus Circus Hotel & Casino on March 31, 2008.
