An Alternative National Anthem

Everybody knows the dice are loaded.
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed.
Everybody knows the war is over.
Everybody knows the good guys lost.
Everybody knows the fight was fixed.
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich.
   That's how it goes.
Everybody knows.

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking.
Everybody knows that the captain lied.
   Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died.
   Everybody talking to their pockets.
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
   And a long red rose.
Everybody knows.

Everybody knows that you love me, baby.
Everybody knows you really do.
Everybody knows that you've been faithful,
Give or take a time or two.
   Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
   Without your clothes.
Everybody knows.

Everybody knows that it's now or never.
Everybody knows that it's me or you.
And everybody knows that you live forever
When you've done a line or two.
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
   For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows.

Everybody knows that the plague is coming.
Everybody knows that it's moving fast.
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman —
Just a shining artifact of the past.
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
   That will disclose
What everybody knows.

And everybody knows that you're in trouble.
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach at Malibu.
   Everybody knows it's coming apart.
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
   Before it blows.
And everybody knows.

Everybody knows. Everybody knows.
That's how it goes. Everybody knows.

TOP SECRET— HushHush!

"The firing of Traci Davis was nothing short of a long-term, well-orchestrated coup."

That remark represents a consensus from informed sources about the firing of the Washoe School superintendent who will probably walk away with a million-dollar settlement as did her predecessor.

This week, the school board starts the process of hiring a high-priced consultant to conduct a national search for a new ingenue naive enough to want to work here.

Nobody knows — until now — that in 2017, with about an hour's notice, the entire school board was rousted to attend an emergency meeting with lawyers.

UPDATE 7-23-2019: KISS OFF $18,317.65 not counting Traci Davis' salary for two days
Fearful that a short black lady might (gasp!) show up for work, the school board chair and her close circle of friends ordered the district's administration building shut down on June 27 and 28. At least 95 employees got time off with pay. Turned out that Ms. Davis was out of town. It took the Barbwire from July 1 until July 23 to get the purported costs — not including $8,000+ and counting to hire a political juice PR firm while still paying a communications staff of about 30 professionals. As Pink Floyd once presciently opined, "We don't need no education". Stay tuned.

The officials were informed that unnamed high-level administrators were leaking inside info to a former employee who had sued the district. The trustees were sworn to secrecy under pain of death, dismemberment or sacrifice of their firstborn.

Fast-forward a couple of years. The alleged leaky administrators were fired for their dastardly deeds, then their boss was fired because she should have known what skulduggery was afoot.

Was she ever informed about what the underlings were doing? Nope. The trustees were sworn to secrecy and the lawyers, paid by the taxpayers, didn't tell her either.

In criminal lingo, someone who witnesses a crime and fails to report it is guilty of misprision. Apparently, the school district is such a snake pit of mismanagement that no one informed the boss about what was going down.

Nobody was allowed to talk to anybody and Ms. Davis got fired on July 1.

"This was a total setup to take advantage of Traci's unpopularity," said an insider.

Ka-ching.

KA-CHING, PART DEUX. Some assert that a contributing factor was St. Mary's unsuccessful bid to win the lucrative school district health insurance contract against Renown.

MY EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION STANDS. If Alfred E. Neuman remains unavailable for the superintendent's post, I want to be considered. I guarantee I can screw up the school district just as badly, if not worse, than the current crowd and I'll do it for half price. A mere $200k per year plus expenses will suffice.

PORN ADDICTS BEWARE. With our school board in the thrall of superstition and unable to make a decision on sex education, students must resort to learning the old fashioned way — from other students. Fortunately, we now have the Internet.

Last Monday, the fake news New York Times reported that major cyberbiggies, including Facebook and Google, are tracking feelthy peekchur website visitors: "A new study scanned 22,284 pornography websites and found them riddled with trackers from major technology companies."

Lighten up. It's just kids from southern states like here in Mississippi West trying to get an education.

With Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court and the self-admitted "stable genius" in the White House, we now have a government that demonstrates what enlightened pornographers can achieve.

For instance, our anatomically correct president certifiably does not have a racist bone in his penis.

DOONESBURY'S ART OF WAR. Garry Trudeau has updated the ancient manual of guerrilla warfare.

"In a tight race, who do you like," he wrote in last Sunday's comics, "some doofus Democrat with 'solutions for America' or a feral POTUS fighting tooth and nail to stay out of prison?"

Ingenious military strategist Sun Tzu advised always leaving a defeated enemy a path for retreat. Those with nothing to lose are far more dangerous.

Or, as Trudeau put it, "Always bet on the cornered rat."

Say cheese!

CORREXION: Last week, I noted that the Reno City Council passed a rent control ordinance on Nov. 13, 1978. The vote was probably five yea vs. one nay (then-Mayor Bruno Menicucci) with Councilmember Bill Granata absent. The Reno Evening Gazette did not publish an itemized count. You will find an annotated and extensive expansion of last week's report at Barbwire.US/

BABY BOOM MINORITY. As of 2019, the vaunted 1946-64 Baby Boom is no longer the largest generational cohort in the United States. I can live with that but GADZOOKS, that pesky fake news New York Times reported a Pew Research poll that found "boomers now identify with the conservatism of the Republican right more readily that any other political ideology."

If Abbie Hoffman wuz alive, he'd be rolling over in his grave.

SPEAKING OF NUMBERS. The US Census is in total disarray under Czar Donaldov. Surprise, surprise.

WALK WITH THE GIANTS. Nominations for the Nevada Press Association Hall of Fame are now open. I have re-entered two Tribune alumni, UNR Journalism Professor Emeritus Jake Highton and Don Dondero, official photographer of the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics, among many accolades. E-mail your support to NPA Executive Director Richard Karpel at <rkarpel@nevadapress.com>. Copy me and I'll upload your comments to their websites.

These were great journalists who deserve posthumous induction. Pass the word. Do it!

[4-20-2019] — About 100 demonstrators from almost all the region's unions, local community service organizations and political activists joined Culinary Union members picketing Circus Circus in the late afternoon of April 18. A couple of CC suits came out to see what all the fuss was about, as if they didn't already know. In addition to the familiar union "contract now!" chants came calls for a strike against the Carano jocks. ¡Viva Huelga! ¡Sí se puede!

REAL NEWS DEPT. In January 2019, Culinary Union Local 226 defeated an attempt by Circus Circus-Reno to decertify (terminate) the union's representation of its workers. No word on whether management plans to appeal the result to the National Labor Relations Board which was recently put out of business for 35 days. Thank you, Czar Donaldov.

CONSUMER CONUNDRUMS: PINK SLIPS, PURGES AND PRUNING. I need to hear from recently purged Eldorado Hotel-Casino, Circus Circus-Reno and Silver Legacy employees. Barbwire spies report perhaps 100 workers got the ax just in time for the 2018 holidays. In the Tribune, at Barbwire.US and in the London Guardian, I have lamented the deepening desperation of renters here in Tesla Valhalla. I'm now getting complaints about medical and dental practices purportedly pruning their patient loads, cutting loose the less-lucrative. That's de facto malpractice but medical professionals are lawsuit-proof under Nevada law — unless you're rich enough to personally pay a few hundred grand in legal fees. That's why TV lawyers only advertise for arrest or accident cases these days. If you've been cast adrift by patient pruning, call me at (775) 882-TALK or e-mail me.
