NOMINEE GUY RICHARDSON INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME |
Time for follytix! Looks like we're in for a lotta laughs, as usual.
Alas, perhaps the best moment of
Campaign '14 has already come and gone and I don't think he even saw it.

If longtime local government critic Sam Dehné hasn't promoted
a media coup with a followup e-mail, then dear Sam may have missed arguably
his biggest hit of the year.

With all the hoopla surrounding the Nevada Supreme Court's decision to reconsider
its ruling banning termed-out Reno councilcritters from running for mayor, KRNV
TV-4 like all the others covered the story.

Then the comedy gods and media gremlins intervened.
The boys in the control room rolled video of a Reno council meeting and cut away from the talking head.
The recording was indeed of a recent
city hall session, but too early in the sequence.

  Instead of Mayor
Bob and his Bobolinx somberly nodding, we saw and heard Sam Dehné
calling the council a bunch of corrupt, moneywasting liars. (His favorite term
is "mendacious." Look it up. I had to.)

People put Sam down for getting up and talking at every opportunity.
But dammit, Sam shows up.
Often.
He is thus frequently the only citizen
present to call a dirty deal a dirty deal. Remember how all local governments,
the Washoe County School District and Gov. Veto El Obtúse unanimously
covered up the $89 million Apple Computer
corporate welfare giveaway until the moment of voting?

  I howled when I saw Sam's rant.
Apparently, the girls back in master
control weren't even watching their own newscast because Sam's screed ran in
its entirety before the generic story followed.

Sam's an old bomber pilot who scored a direct hit, albeit by happy and humorous
  accident.
THE IDES OF FARCE. Just when I thought Channel 4 couldn't top Sam, last Monday came an unintentional joke by a green KRNV reporter.
Standing in cold and dark Carson
City, the young blonde informed the audience that candidate filing closes on
  March 15.

Alas and alack, filing does not close on the fabled Ides of March, but
  on Friday the 14th.
So any hopeful waiting for Julius Caesar's date with destiny will learn the hard way not to believe as holy writ any divine revelation from the learned and enlightened news media.
Otherwise, aspirations risk assassination.

Speaking of things Caesarian, stay tuned for lots of surprises at the March
31 César Chávez Day Celebration. Monitor CesarChavezNevada.com.

  TOAST ALERT. Teachers'
union tax petition supporters and opponents would do well to review the
  Barbwire
  of Feb. 28, 2013.

Passage of the tax initiative could easily lead to a successful court challenge
that would blow out not only the revenue hike, but also term limits and the
  state's worst anti-union laws.

Beware the Ides of March and the demons of good intentions.
Just ask Channel 4.

Keep sending show suggestions.
Current frontrunners include (pardon the pun) wild mustangs as canned goods, education, i-Guns and gay Olympics with César Chávez in Nevada recently surging.
Now come queries about ballot questions. After the Jan. 30 column came a surge of questions about the Nevada State Education Association corporate tax petition on this November's ballot.
Stay tuned.

The medium that shapes public opinion needs at least one refuge where it is not filtered through the distorted green eye shades of prissy corporate accountants for whom profit is the only priority; where self-censorship is the journalist's normal work environment and where all sins of omission are tacitly encouraged and forgiven with the wave of a balance sheet.
This is important.
 We've got work to do.

HONOR YOUR DON. Keep sending comments supporting legendary Nevada photographer Don Dondero (1920-2003) for the Nevada Press Association Hall of Fame.
His life's work appeared worldwide, including the Tribune and most probably every newspaper in Nevada.
Enlist in the campaign to install Big Don.
Please send me your memories and endorsements via e-mail or to P.O. Box 10034, Reno NV 89510.
The Barbwire got the late Reno Gazette-Journal columnist Guy Richardson elected in 2012.
Let's double down.
