Last week, the venerable Constitution of the United States again proved solid gold — ductile and malleable for changing times while remaining dependably immutable.

Something for everybody. Plug in your proclivities just like the Bible.

The uptight Catholics on the Supreme Court subdued their fellow religionauts to both rescue our national health insurance sales promotion and expand the marital franchise.

Farther south, the confederate flag's future got shot full of holes by freedom loving racists.

The funeral of a bulleted preacher, whose very name means mercy, provided President Obama with the opportunity to eclipse President Reagan.

Ronald the Vague was at his best portraying his idol, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Like any capable actor, Reagan could cry on cue, especially at funerals.

Friday, Barack Obama, standing in the cradle of the Confederacy, became in one speech the greatest orator to hold the office of whom we have a recording. (Most scholars say Abraham Lincoln had a high-pitched southern twang.)

JFK, FDR, Teddy Bear and Ron were relegated to the second tier when the skinny kid from Hawaii sang the first verse of Amazing Grace, the greatest lyrics ever composed in English. (The Grateful Dead's Ripple is a fair runnerup. Beyond that, just go dance.)

The venerable hymn of redemption underscored Obama's lecture on the spirit of forgiveness.

Comforting words. Transcendent presentation. Greatness in one brief, shining moment because we all needed it even as a murderer was shot down in upstate New York, a cold shower on a hot summer day.

I hope I never need to consider finding the overwhelming forgiveness exhibited by South Carolina victims' families.

The president struck a chord when he mentioned "God's plan."

Micromanagement attributed to the long-bearded old white guy on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel too often ignores another old white guy: Father Time.

Basketball great Bill Russell tells the story of an early conversation with Boston Celtics Coach Red Auerbach.

"You're a Jew and I'm black," Russell said. "How do you plan to survive in this town?"

"I'll outlive them all," replied the future coaching great.

Time makes fools of all, including my former next-door neighbor, a UNR medical student.

He once approached me to sign the initiative petition that made non-traditional marriage illegal in Nevada.

I thought about lecturing the religious young man but changed the subject when it occurred to me that God and Father Time would have their way with him.

The doc had three children back then. Now it's seven or eight.

I take dark pleasure thinking of the inevitable day when his non-traditional son or daughter informs him that God has ordained a family learning experience.

In the alternative marriage decision, Justice Anthony Kennedy concluded by noting how love could survive beyond death.

Forgive or outlive. Your choice.

Immortal Coach Auerbach would understand.

65 YEARS OF KICKING THE CAN DOWN THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD. Read Tribune alumnus Dennis Myers' tour de force about a tour de farce in the Feb. 5 Reno News & Review. His cover story "No Fair" provides a quick and vicious history lesson about Nevada government failing to take care of its people.

MYERS: Nevadans may well wonder why one of the state’s biggest and most familiar problems could be ignored so assiduously for decades, like an elephant in the room. In the end, the explanation comes down to a rule of thumb for politicians: Offending the affluent comes with consequences. Offending the working poor does not.

He also posits a tax solution which liberals may find quite surprising. (I resemble that remark.) Myers once again looks positively psychic. Actually, he just reads history.

TOMORROW'S NEWS TODAY: FEEL UP YOUR FIRE METER. The Reno Gazette-Journal did big spreads on three consecutive Sundays (Sept. 14, Sept. 21 and Sept. 28) on NV Energy smart meter fires. Welcome aboard. FIRE METER UPDATES: THE NEVADA FIRE MARSHALL'S INVESTIGATION concluded "don't worry, be happy." I'm still worried and will continue fondling NVE's precious equipment —> If your smart meter feels very hot, not just from sunshine, call 911.

In its Sunday 21 Dec. 2014 front page headline major story, the Reno Gazette-Journal published results of the NVEnergy-commissioned "don't worry, be happy" echo study. On 1-27-2015, the RGJ published an analysis based on veteran reporter Anjeanette Damon's review of more than 1,000 pages of documents. Barbwire bottom line: NVE handles this like auto manufacturers handle defects —> It's cheaper to pay legal settlements after people are injured or killed than to fix the problem.

Don'tcha worry 'bout a thing! If you can't trust your power company, who can you trust?

DIDN'T THEY MAKE A MOVIE CALLED "THE INCREDIBLES"? On 2-6-2015, the RGJ reported that the Public Utilities Commission has ordered NVE to hire an independent laboratory to review the material. UPDATE: The report said all is well. I still recommend feeling up your fire meter on a regular basis.
